Danny Wilson is regarded as one of the most promising youngster to come through Murray Park. He is a left sided central defender that is comfortable on the ball and is well-built for his age. He made his first team debut in the 3-1 away win over Dundee and produced a promising display. He has been linked to Premiership clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa in the past. Liverpool are the only ones though to have made an enquiry and they look like they'll get him for a fee of £2.5 million. It's one of these situations where you expect him to go down south, be a reserve player for the next few years and come back to Scotland and play for one of the smaller clubs after failing in England. His talent should mean that doesn't happen though and it will leave a bitter taste in the mouth knowing we brought him up, gave him a chance and he's leaving at the first opportunity.
2008/2009 Season
The tall left footed defender captained the under 19 side in the 08/09 season. Unfortunately, the young Rangers lost the league in the last few weeks and were defeated in extra time in the final by Hibs. His first inclusion in the top team came in the Scottish Cup against St. Johnstone although he never came on.
2009/2010 Season
Young Wilson made his first appearance in the 2-0 pre season loss at Portsmouth. He wasn't seen in a Rangers jersey again for 2 months and was named in the starting line up against Dundee on October 27th. Anyone at the game will have been impressed with his composure and ability to spot a pass. Getting rare these days for a young Scot to have any sort of technical ability but he appears to have it in abundance. With his debut out the way, he will be hoping to play in more games this season. His next game came in the very same city just 5 days later as we played Dundee United. He was again very composed in defense and Rangers were 1-0 up at half time before the game got postponed for poor weather. Technically, he still hadn't made his SPL debut although he made his Champions League debut away in Romania against Unirea Urziceni. He is the youngest Ranger to start since the start of the Champions League in 1992/93 but not the youngest European debutant ever. That honour is held by Willie Henderson who was a month younger when he played against Vorwaerts of the former East Germany on November 23, 1961 when he also scored in a 4-1 win. Young Wilson produced a man of the match display and headed the ball off the line right after we had scored. Unfortunately, the Romanians would score in the last minute to deny us the win. He eventually made his official SPL debut against St. Mirren in the 2-1 win. He would play for a few more games including the Champions League match against VFB Stuttgart although Madjid Bougherra would replace him against Falkirk.
Like his fellow teen, Wilson was advised to reject a new contract offered by Martin Bain. It really would be disappointing to lose a player like Wilson on the cheap as his performances since he's came in shows he has what it takes to make it to the top. The way he can pass a ball 60 yards reminds you a bit of Liverpool's Daniel Agger. Walter Smith wasn't too happy the pair turned down the deals, saying "They've turned it down so they must see an opportunity elsewhere which would probably need to be down in England, I would imagine."
He played in his first cup final of his career against St Mirren but was the second player to be sent off for Rangers on the day. He pulled Craig Dargo as he was approaching the goal and the ref had no option but to send him off. Luckily for him, it seemed to fire up the team and we won the cup.
