Steven Whittaker signed from Hibs in a £2million deal. The right back had made almost 150 appearances for Hibs before Walter Smith paid a couple of million for him in the summer of 2007. He was played in all different positions in his first couple of years including right back, left back, centre midfield, right midfield and left midfield. His natural position is right back though and he's been playing there for the last 9 months or so non stop. He's one of those players that doesn't seem to score tap-ins and his run from the half-way line against Sporting Lisbon typified this.
He's earned four caps for Scotland.
2008/2009 Season
This season didn't really kick off for him until the last 3 months where he was given a run of games. It started in the 5-1 win against Hamilton Accies in the cup and he kept his spot from there on in. It wouldn't be unfair to say his performances contributed in a big way to us winning the title. He scored a goal of the season contender away at his former club as Rangers held on for a 3-2 win.
2009/2010 Season
After scoring 2 goals in the 4-1 win over Hamilton, things have went down for Whittaker. His Champions League performances were a disaster and this crept into his SPL performances. He was dropped for Kirk Broadfoot when he returned from his long-term injury. After being dropped from the team around Christmas, he's came back and added a few more goals to his tally to make it the best goalscoring season in his career. He's third in the Rangers charts behind Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller with 10 goals.
