Ian Durrant was viewed as one of the most talented players of his generation when he first broke into the Rangers team as a teenager in 1985. At the age of 18, he became a regular in the side and marked his Old Firm debut with the opening goal in a 3-0 home win over Celtic less than two weeks after his 19th birthday.
In October 1988, however, the midfielder suffered a career-threatening knee injury when he was tackled by Aberdeen's Neil Simpson in a match at Pittodrie. Durrant was out of football for well over two years as a result and required several operations, not playing again until April 1991. But it says much about how highly he was regarded that despite the fact his return came in a reserve fixture against Hibernian, 35,000 fans were at Ibrox to see it.
Durrant went on to establish himself in the team again under Walter Smith and made almost 300 appearances as he played a major part in the Nine in a Row era. He moved to Kilmarnock in 1998 and after seeing out his playing career there, it was at Rugby Park that he made his first step into coaching. Working with the Ayrshire outfit's youths initially, Durrant soon moved up to work alongside Jim Jefferies and Billy Brown as their first-team coach. Having made a good impression at Killie, the 20-times capped ex-Scotland international caught the eye of then Rangers manager Alex McLeish.
In February 2005, the Ibrox boss made his move to bring Durrant home and he was appointed as the club's under-19 manager. Like he did at Kilmarnock, the former Light Blues star has made gradual progress through the backroom ranks. Having later run the reserve team, he was called upon to help the first team during their run to the UEFA Cup final in the 2007/08 season. The following campaign, Durrant was permanently moved into the senior squad and he now plays a key role in coaching them alongside manager Smith, assistant Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall.
