"The prince of goalkeepers", Jerry Dawson was one the truly great goalkeepers in the Scottish game. He played 14 times for Scotland in the period 1934-39. Born in Falkirk in 1909, he came to Rangers in 1929, and by the early 1930s had succeeded another fine Rangers goalkeeper, Tom Hamilton.During 16 years at Ibrox, Jerry Dawson 5 league championships, two Scottish cups,two Scottish war cups,two Summer war cups and one Southern League cup.And he defended the Rangers goal throughout all their various regional League success during the war.It clearly denied Jerry and many of his contempories several seasons at the peak of their careers.
His goalkeeping was unspectacular but thoroughly dependable.Pehaps his greatest goalkeeping quality was the speed of his reflexes, and he was a goalkeeper most definitely in command of his area.
He suffered a badly broken leg during the South League Cup final against Hibs at Hampden in 1944.His injury was serious enough to cast doubts on his career, but he was back in action the following year.
His last game for Rangers was against Moscow Dynasmo in the famous 1945 game and shortly after signed for Falkirk until his retirement in 1949.
He was manager of East Fife for five years in the 1950s.
