| Kris Boyd
|
Since Boyd's move to Rangers, he was responsible for 35% of our goals in that time period and was the second fastest player in our history to reach 100 goals behind Jim Forrest. We lost only one game in which Boyd scored in: against Dunfermline in Ian Durrant's only match in charge.
Kilmarnock
On 25th August 1999, Boyd signed for local Ayrshire club, Kilmarnock, making his debut against Celtic in the last game of the 2000/01 season against Celtic. He managed to get a place in the team the following season, following the departure of Ally McCoist and Christophe Cocard and went on to score five goals.
Boyd went on to score another 63 goals for Kilmarnock over the course of the next four seasons, scoring five against Dundee United (having a sixth disallowed) almost setting a new SPL Record.
In the 2005/2006 season Boyd turned down two £500,000 offers from Championship sides Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday. He played his last game for the club on 17th December 2005 against Falkirk, scoring a goal in the last minute with the last touch of the ball.
Rangers
On January 1st 2006, he signed for his boyhood heroes, for a fee of around £400,000. Generously Boyd waived £20,000, half of his signing on fee, to the Kilmarnock Youth Development.
Boyd scored 20 goals in 17 starts for Rangers in the second half of the 2005/2006 season, finishing with 37 goals in the SPL, Europes top goal scorer, and the first player to be top scorer for two teams in the same season.
He was suspended for the first match of the 2006/2007 season, and left out of the team for the following two games under Le Guen, where Rangers drew 2-2 with Dundee United, and 1-1 with Dunfermline. Boyd was back in the starting 11 for the following game and scored both goals in a 2-0 win over hearts. Boyd's goal scoring continued with two goals against former club Kilmarnock and a fantastic 30 yard volley against Dunfermiline from which Allan McGregor picked him out from 85 yards.
Boyd caused controversy after scoring a penalty against Motherwell when he held up six fingers, apparently for the then , stripped club captain Barry Ferguson, dropped by Paul Le Guen following a dressing room bust up. Following Le Guen's departure Boyd scored a double to welcome back Walter Smith in his first game back against Dundee United. In February of that year he scored a hat trick against his former club, Kilmarnock, and another against Aberdeen at Ibrox. Boyd's 100th Scottish Premier League goal, and his first against Celtic came on 5th May 2006, in a 2-0 victory for Rangers.
On 26th September 2007, 627 days after his debut, Boyd became the second fastest Ranger ever to score 50 goals for the club second only to Jim Forrest. He scored his fifth hat-trick for Rangers in a 6-0 Scottish Cup win against East Stirling.
The first trophy of Boyd's career came on 16th March 2008 when Rangers beat Dundee United in the final, to win the Scottish League Cup. Boyd was, as quoting the commentator Paul Mitchell "The hero in 90 minutes, the hero in 120 mins, and the hero in the penalty shootout", scoring both of Rangers goals in a 2-2 draw, and the winning penalty in the subsequent penalty shootout. Later that season he also scored a double, again in a final, to secure his second trophy, and win the Scottish Cup 3-2 over Queen of the South.
The 2008/2009 season beagin with Cardiff City failing to lure Boyd (once again) to the English Championship. He opened his tally for that season with a 92nd minute penalty against Hearts, and knocked in his sixth hat trick of his Rangers career at Ibrox against Inverness CT in a 5-0 win. Three days later, Boyd scored another hat trick against Hamilton Accies, his seventh of his career. The January 2009 transfer window was full of speculation of a move away to Birmingham City, alongside former manager Alex McLeish. Rangers accept a £3 million bid, however Boyd wanted to stay at Rangers and declined. Boyd's 100th goal of his career came for Rangers in a Scottish Cup Semi Final match versus St Mirren, on April 25th 2009. The game ended 3-0 and sent Rangers into the final. Boyd scored in the final game of the season, against Dundee United at Tannadice, helping Rangers secure the Scottish Premier League Trophy for the 52nd time.
At the start of the 2009/2010 season speculation, again, mounted about Boyd's future at Rangers, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, Boyd rejected any move away and said he wanted to stay at Rangers. Ian Durrant commented that Boyd's contract will depend on how Rangers faired in Europe.
Although Boyd broke his duck at Tynecastle, the 2009/10 season never really got going for him until after we suffered an embarrassing loss to Unirea Urziceni. His revival would start at Ibrox against Hibs where he produced a performance that included a goal and work outside the box, a thing fans had complained about in the past. His form would force Walter Smith to pick him to start his first Champions League match at home to VFB Stuttgart. We lost this match and Boyd missed a header from 6 yards out with the score at 1-1. Scoring in big games is another thing leveled against Boyd but that wouldn't dent his confidence. Our fantastic domestic form started at Falkirk and Kris Boyd would be in the middle of it. He scored 2 goals and followed that up against St Johnstone with another two goals. He didn't score away at Dundee United but grabbed one against Motherwell and at Hibs. His goal at Easter Road put him 3 goals to overtaking Henrik Larsson as the top scorer in SPL history. On the 30th December 2009, he would break this...and in style. A 9 minute 22 second hat-trick would put him level on goals with the Swede. With the next game at Parkhead would he save it to then? No he wouldn't. In the 75th minute, the people sitting in the Copland would witness history being made as Boyd followed up his initial effort by putting it past Nicky Weaver. He broke the record with a typical Kris Boyd goal and he celebrated by sticking out his tongue, a celebration Larsson was famous for! The tannoy played Simply The Best and they would be playing it again 5 minutes later as, for the second time in his career, he scored for the fifth time in the one game. If he keeps up his performances along with his goals, he will be a Rangers legend.
Well he didn't keep up his performances with goals. Since that night against Dundee United at Ibrox where he got the 5 and broke the record, he was pretty abysmal. He started the new year match at Parkhead and after that went for a hernia operation. He was back within 3 weeks and perhaps that contributed in his poor performances, but it didn't excuse his poor attitude. When Celtic signed Robbie Keane in the January transfer window everyone predicted Boyd would still outscore the Irishman. He scored 7, Keane got 16. Obviously going through his longest goal drought in his career and scoring 0 goals in 10 games from open play didn't help. Obviously with Kris being out of contract at the end of the season people wondered what the future held for him. He said Walter Smith's future would be a big factor in where he was playing his football the next season. While Walter signed on, Boyd didn't and interest came from England, Spain, Italy, Germany and Turkey. The offer of £20k a week wasn't enough for Boyd as he accepted a £28k a week offer from.. Middlesbrough. He said that Middlesbrough boss, ex Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, was the manager to take his game to the next level and that he was a proven winner, as you saw with Celtic. Not really things you want to hear from a player whose departure left a few people bitter about how a Rangers fan could leave his team to join a club like Middlesbrough and praise ex-Celtic managers. Nevertheless, hopefully Boyd does well down there. The whole affair will have soured people's memories of him though.
