Madjid Bougherra is a centre back that was born in France but plays for Algeria. He started his career in the lower divisions of French football with Gueugnon before signing for Crewe Alexandra on loan. They got relegated so he joined Sheffield Wednesday after that. He made his international debut during his time with Wednesday but only stayed a year and joined Charlton Athletic for £2.5million.
On 31st July, he would make the biggest move of his career and move north. He signed a 4 year deal for a fee of £2.5million but unfortunately he wasn't signed on time to play against FBK Kaunas. He made a composed debut at Falkirk and his performances over the season would make us forget about Carlos Cuellar. His quick bursts forward from defense make him one of the best attackers in the squad and this showed during a Champions League game with VFB Stuttgart. After a title-winning first campaign, his second one hasn't been as good because of disturbances with his national team. He's been back late on more than one occasion and this led to him being benched for the home game against Stuttgart and the away game at Aberdeen. He's came back though he missed all of January representing Algeria at the African Cup of Nations, where they finished 4th after losing in the semi finals to rivals Egypt.
He is the first Algerian defender to win the Ballon d’Or Algérien and his performances at the 2010 African Cup of Nations got him into the the BBC African XI.
2008/2009 Season
This was a great season for him performance-wise. He won Player of the Year and the £2.5million has been a bargain. His first and only SPL goal came in the 3-0 win at Hibs and he's never been on the losing side of a game against Celtic. One notable game was the second last of the season when he was sent off against Aberdeen for a challenge on Jamie Langfield, the Aberdeen goalkeeper. It wasn't a bad challenge and his momentum took him into him but somehow Stuart Dougal and his linesman thought it would be funny to send him off. It was rescinded and he was able to play in the league winning match at Tannadice.
2009/2010 Season
The main thing that will please Madjid this season is helping his country to their first World Cup since '86. The Desert Foxes had to negotiate a play-off match with Egypt after an identical record in the group stages. They beat them 1-0 and they will play England, Slovenia and USA in South Africa. Hopefully he will come up against DaMarcus Beasley and Mo Edu. His performances over the year have earned him Algerian Player of the Year. He was the first defender to win this.
